The professors and their academic staff of the statistics department are currently working on new methods and models for time series analysis, statistical genetics, quality control as well as biostatistics and financial statistics, all in close collaboration with biologists, medics, economists, and engineers. This research is supported by a collaborative research centre as well as numerous external links.


Official Statistics - European Master in Official Statistics - EMOS

The European official statistics have the task to represent the social and economic life of all member states of the EU in numbers. Questions include: who is poor, who is rich, how are the prices and the assets changing, which goods are going where. A study focusing on EMOS is therefore ideal for those who are interested in statistics in the original sense and want to know what it really looks like "out there".

In addition to pure data collection, there are also method problems, such as replacing missing values ​​or calculating seasonal effects from time series: Which part of the sales increase in December is attributable to the Christmas business, and which part is attributable to "real" growth? Also, knowledge of the national accounts are central: how to calculate the social product and its components consumption and investment, saving, import, export and so on.

There are excellent job prospects in official statistics, which employs several thousand academics across Europe, with over 100 job offers every year.

Biostatistics deals with manifold questions of medical research. In addition to classical questions of clinical statistics and epidemiology, it also deals with many other medical topics in life sciences, toxicology and ecology.

Clinical statistics investigate the effect of clinical parameters on the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases. Clinical trials with well-defined statistical analysis methods are required in most countries for the approval of all prescription drugs.

In epidemiology, the influence of various possible factors influencing disease and health in individuals and in populations is investigated. Epidemiology therefore plays a central role in health promotion. Research on genetic issues is particularly intensive worldwide. For example, personalized medicine and genetic epidemiology are concerned with the role of genetic factors in clinical statistics and epidemiology. In recent years, many new experimental techniques have been developed for the analysis of genomic data, which measure countless features simultaneously, so that the skilled handling of big data analysis is enormously important.

Many graduate students of our Department of Statistics work at key positions on the development and application of biostatistical methods, especially in the pharmaceutical industry, in contract research organizations, in the health sector and at universities and research institutes.

Econometrics / Empirical economic research

Econometrics is the science of quantitative - i.e. statistical - analysis of economic contexts. This includes, for example, macroeconom(etr)ic issues such as the modeling and forecasting of economic growth, consumption or unemployment. In microeconom(etr)ic analyzes, among other things, the market power of companies, the choice of education of young people or the forecast of sales volumes are of great interest. In addition, financial econometrics has developed as an independent field in the last 20 to 30 years. This is about the modeling and forecasting of prices of securities of all kinds.

Methodologically, econometrics is broadly based, too, with the most important tool being regression analysis. Due to the temporal structure of many economic data, various methods of time series analysis, which are often developed especially for econometric questions, are also of great importance.

Graduates in this field of interest will find exciting careers in banks, insurance companies, management consultancies, large industrial and commercial enterprises or economic research institutes. Last but not least, 17 of the 77 Nobel laureates in economics were econometricians.

Technometrics deal with the development and use of statistical methods in the physical, chemical and engineering sciences, as well as in information science and information technology. This includes developments on the interface of statistics and computer science such as data mining, machine learning and the handling of large amounts of data.

The central statistical tools are on the one hand quality assurance methods such as control charts, measuring system analysis, reliability analysis and statistical experimental design as well as the statistical modeling and simulation of technical processes. In particular, this involves the development and use of models for fault detection, fault analysis and improvement in technical processes and products.

On the other hand, technometrics develop tools for analyzing large amounts of data. This includes special classification and regression techniques that can handle large amounts of data, as well as mathematical-statistical methods for estimating the behavior of these techniques with ever-larger amounts of data. This field of so-called "big data analytics" has become an indispensable part of current science.
