Intensive Course in Statistics

The Intensive Course in Statistics 2019 takes place within the scope of the International Summer Program,
Track A: Engineering (Applied Mathematics) and the Master course Automation and Robotics.
The course addresses international students. It is not designated to students of the Department of Statistics.

Schedule

  • The course starts on the 29th of May 2019 in room CDI/121 and ends on the 19th of July 2019.
  • In typical weeks, the course is scheduled as follows:

    • Wednesday, 10-12, CDI/121 (Tutorial / computer lab)
    • Wednesday, 12-14, Math Tower E27 (Lecture)
    • Thursday, 12-14, Math Tower E27 (Lecture)

Course outline

The course gives an introduction to statistical concepts that are useful for research projects in various fields of application and areas of science.


Specifically, the lecture covers the following topics:

  • basic probability random variables
  • probability and sampling distributions
  • point estimation
  • confidence intervals
  • hypothesis testing
  • simple linear regression
  • time series analysis

 

Except for basic mathematical calculus no prior knowledge is necessary.

Software

Feel free to bring your own laptop to all tutorials or use one of the computers in CDI/121. You might want to install or update the free and open source statistics software R and the graphical user interface RStudio prior to the first tutorial.
